Bahrabise Municipality of Sindhupalchok has formulated the Child Protection Policy and established an endowment fund of NPR 31, 50000 for children. With this, many are hopeful that child protection can be easier to carry out. "It will make it easier for us to work on child protection issue with this fund, once the municipality ratifies the Child Protection Policy," says Sushila Pakhrin, the Deputy Mayor of Bahrabise Municipality.
Gramin Mahila Srijanshil Pariwar (GMSP) has conducted a series of programs and activities to sensitize the local government on child protection. It imparted child rights training to the local government, conducted child gathering and organized several consultation meetings with the municipal officials and other stakeholders before drafting the policy.
Besides, GMSP has established and strengthened the child protection mechanism. Child protection committees have been formed at ward and municipality levels. After the formulation of the policy, the municipality has promptly taken the initiative to work on child protection issues. The endowment fund is the result of the same.
Imparting training on child protection to local government representatives, organizing children's gathering to take and incorporate their issues in the policy, frequent consultation and meetings with local government officials and other stakeholders have all resulted in positive outcomes.
